The ethereal body music that comes from punk and hardcore bands can sometimes be transcribed into different forms, defying genres. Hugh is the debut album by Ryan Baxter under the moniker R . Lovejoy, formerly the drummer of Wollongong’s The Nuclear Family. In this album Lovejoy takes you on a sonic excursion into some dark and often beautiful spaces. It is a very cinematic record, often at times making you feel as though you can create your own universe around it.

Like his contemporaries R . Lovejoy could be compared to Tim Hecker or Oneohtrix Point Never but his experimentation uniquely fits into a punk platform. This is one person, alone in his room, doing sound experiments. Making and listening to experimental music can often feel like an arduous task but on Hugh there are so many moments of ecstasy. Lovejoy communicates his world view through loud piercing sound, warped samples and electric guitar. It’s minimalism is the school of New York via Wollongong. Lovejoy’s Hugh is a must have Australian experimental release.
